More questions than answers from way out on the long tail

Quote of the Day

Being “wired” does not mean becoming “computer literate” any more than driving an automobile requires becoming “combustion literate.”

  1. Being “wired” does not mean becoming “computer literate”

When the technology is finally stable, THEN that will be the case. In the meantime, you do need some degree of tech savvy.

Think back to the early days of consumer radio. You really did have to have some electronic smarts to get your radio to work properly. I have a 1924 Atwood-Kent; it has about 10 knobs on the front. Three of them were used for tuning.

When the technology finally stabilized, the average consumer was able to enjoy a radio that had TWO knobs… On/Off Volume and Station Selection.

Eventually, Computers will become as simple to use as a two-knob radio. Until then, we’re saddled with non-intuitive ways to use the damn machine… Point/Click with a silly mouse… Typing on a Keyboard… Click “Start” to stop your PC… Stupid stuff. We mold ourselves to its needs, when it should be the other way around.

To be “wired” you still have to have “computer literacy.”

  2. I think the spirit of the quote is more of a “should not” rather than a “does not”
